Jameelah Michl, the woman who shot and killed film marketing consultantand social justice advocate Michael Latt, was sentenced on Wednesday to 35 years to life in state prison by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kerry White.

The 33-year-old Latt was attacked and fatally shot by Michl with a semi-automatic weapon in his home in the Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles in November 2023. Prosecutors said that Michl targeted Latt “for being friends with a woman she had been stalking.” They stated that Michl knocked on the door, then forced herself into Latt’s home where she killed him. Latt was the founder and CEO of Lead With Love, a social impact marketing agency. He worked with top filmmakers and talent like Ryan Coogler, Common, Ava DuVernay and Barry Jenkins, as well as with entertainment companies such as Warner Bros. and Netflix.

“Today brings a measure of closure to a deeply painful chapter for Mr. Latt’s family, friends and our entire community,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. “As a tireless advocate for social justice, Mr. Latt championed equality, justice and equity in our criminal legal system. Mr. Latt’s ability to uplift the community left an indelible mark. His legacy will continue to inspire us to strive for a more just and inclusive society.”

In June, Michl plead guilty to one count of first-degree murder, and one count of first-degree burglary. Michl also admitted the use of a firearm.
