A24 Strikes Landmark Deal With Publishing House Mack to Distribute Books in Stores Worldwide

A24‘s growing range of books, including its much-loved screenplay collection, will soon be available in physical stores around the world for the first time following a deal with independent publisher Mack.

The publishing partnership —the first of its kind between a studio and a publishing house —will see A24’s existing line of film, TV, and creator-driven books sold in bookstores globally from September, distributed via Mack’s network in the U.S., Europe and Asia. They were previously only available to order via A24’s online shop.

A24 launched its own publishing division in 2019, a collection it said at the time would “celebrate the singular vision and unbridled artistry of noted writer-directors, showcasing how they saw their films through from script to screen.” The first three releases were hardback screenplays of “Moonlight,” “The Witch” and “Ex Machina,” books that also featured production sketches, concept art and guest-written essays inspired by the films’ themes.

Since then, it has published screenplays of its films including Robert Eggers’s“The Lighthouse,” Greta Gerwig’s“Lady Bird” and Ari Aster’s“Hereditary,” as well as original concepts such as the “Horror Caviar” cookbook, “99 Movie Crosswords,” the “Florida!” hyper-local guide to the “most far-out state in America” and various children’s books.

Despite making its first foray into brick-and-mortar retail through the new partnership with Mack, A24will continue to see these books online as well.

“Never before has a leading entertainment company and an art book publisher come together in an exclusive partnership of this nature,” said Mack founder Michael Mack. “It speaks to the shared vision of independent production houses that prioritise artistic innovation and creative expression.”

Last year Mack, which specialises in books on contemporary art, critical theory, film and architecture, released Sofia Coppola’s first book “Archive,” timed to the premiere on her latest film “Priscilla” —distributed by A24 — at the Venice Film Festival. The large, hardback and bright pink book covered the entirety of Coppola’s career in film using her own personal collection of photographs, early development work, reference collages, influences, annotated scripts and unseen behind-the-scenes documentation.
