MUSICAL HUSTINGS
Some of the Sony Music Group‘s top European artists are backing a voter participation campaign. Sony has launched what it describes as a “non-partisan campaign,” titled Your Voice, Your Power, Your Vote, to encourage voting in the June European Union elections, with a focus on young people and underrepresented groups. In partnership with the European Youth Forum, which represents some 100 youth organizations across the continent, the campaign will unveil a collection of films, across multiple platforms in multiple languages, featuring Sony Music Group’s roster of artists and songwriters.
Artists and songwriters featured in the campaign include Goldielocks (Finland), Soso Maness (France), $OHO BANI, Clueso, Lotte, Alvaro Soler, HE/RO, Joris and Culcha Candela (Germany), IL VOLO (Italy), Sam Feldt and Mr Belt & Wezol (The Netherlands), Szczyl (Poland), Dino D’Santiago (Portugal), Rozalen (Spain) and Jackie Mere (Sweden).
“2024 is an election year for almost half the global population, and civil societies thrive when everyone contributes to the democratic process,” said Towalame Austin, executive VP for global philanthropy and social impact, Sony Music Group. “Young people are key to a vibrant society. They care about the world we live in and are active and engaged every day through widespread movements, activism and more. However, while social action ensures their voices are heard, voting is also key to ensuring they are listened to.”

TURNING 50
Studiocanal is releasing a 4K restoration of Francis Ford Coppola‘s 1974 Palme d’Or winner “The Conversation” in U.K. cinemas on July 5, to commemorate its 50th anniversary. The film will then be available to own via a two-disc 4K UHD collector’s edition and on digital from July 15. “The Conversation” focuses on Harry Caul (Gene Hackman), a detached and paranoid surveillance expert who finds himself becoming a victim of the same modern technology he uses to destroy others. For the restoration, the original negative was accessed for the first time and scanned in 4K. An approved reference print was used for the colour grading and the 5.1 soundtrack was created in 2000 by Walter Murch. The home entertainment release will include the original 1974 mono track. The restoration was fully approved by Coppola.
Coppola said: “As you will notice, I have never offered a new version of ‘The Conversation,’ which is a film I have always been proud of, I’ve never felt the need to improve. It also features my wonderful collaboration with its editor (along with Richard Chew) and sound designer, Walter Murch which reinforces my belief that cinema is a collaborative effort. I am gratified to have made a film that has lived for 50 years.”
