Dark Star Pictures has acquired North American distribution rights to “Big Boys,” an LGBTQ coming-of-age comedy. The company is planning a theatrical release in May, followed by a digital launch in June, which will coincide with Pride Month.

Written and directed byCorey Sherman, “Big Boys” follows a group of teenage boys whose unexpected romantic attachment transforms a simple camping trip into a weekend of self-discovery. “The first crush of a young queer person is a profound experience, filled with awkward, humorous moments. We aimed to delve into this pivotal phase, resonating with those who’ve had similar experiences,” says Sherman. “We’re thrilled to partner with Dark Star Pictures and share this film across North America.”

The film’s ensemble cast includesEmily Deschanel(FX’s “Bones”),Dora Madison(“Alone With You”),Taj Cross(Hulu’s “PEN15”),Marion Van Cuyck(Hulu’s “PEN15”) and newcomerIsaac Krasner. It was produced by Allison Tate(“A Kiss From Your Lips”).

The film made its global debut at BFI Flare Worldwide and its U.S. premiere at OutFest, where it took home the audience award and honored Krasner with the outstanding performance prize. The film has also screened at frameline and Palm Springs International Film Festival and is slated for screenings at TIFF Next Wave, Cleveland International Film Festival and Milwaukee Film Festival.

“Dark Star is thrilled to usher Sherman’s charming and impeccably crafted film to theaters across North America,” said Michael Repsch, president of Dark Star Pictures. “Not only has ‘Big Boys’captivated film critics, but we’re confident that viewers of all ages will be entranced by its moving narrative and will immediately fall in love with the talented young actors.”

The deal was negotiated by Repsch for Dark Star, with Film Collaborative’s Orly Ravid and Bridge Independent’s Bill Strausrepresenting the filmmakers.
