Danny McBride has a bone to pick with movie theaters. With the popularization of theaters that now serve dinner and drinks in the middle of a movie (see Alama Drafthouse locations, for example), the “Eastbound & Down” and “Pineapple Express” comedian recently told GQ magazine that he is staunchly against the trend.

“I hate it, I can’t stand it,” McBride said while addressing the theaters-that-serves-dinner trend. “I also don’t think it makes sense to combine booze with movies. You’re going to have to piss. Doesn’t alcohol make you want to get up and get loose? You don’t want to sit there, drink beer, and just be quiet. I would have no interest in going to see a movie and just pounding IPAs. Just fucking falling asleep.”

A better idea, according to McBride, would-be movie theaters that offer marijuana and allow patrons to smoke pot. Movies and weed “go together fucking perfectly,” he said.

Per GQ magazine: “McBride, [David Gordon] Green and their film-school buddy Jody Hill had at some point kicked around the idea of opening a theater with a built-in dispensary. Green Screen, they’d planned to call it. ‘If I went to a theater, and it was like, “Here’s your popcorn and here’s fucking weed,” I feel like that would be an awesome little combo right there,’ McBride said. Green wondered: ‘Why did we not do anything with that?’Too busy,McBride replied.”

Alamo Drafthouse is probably the most high-profile theater chain that offers extensive in-theater dining options, including a from-scratch food menu and local beers on draft and craft cocktails. Food and drink items are brought to moviegoers by servers trained not to disrupt the movie experience.

The theater chain recently made news for exploring a sale. Several Hollywood studios were approached to assess their interest in buying the company, according to two sources. It’s unclear if the talks are ongoing or how close the company is to a potential acquisition.
