Jack Black recently told the news outlet Joe, while making the press rounds for “Kung Fu Panda 4,” that he is more than ready to make a sequel to “School of Rock,” the 2003 comedy classic that was directed by Richard linklater and written by Mike White. Black has stayed close with his younger co-stars over the years, but a movie sequel has never gotten off the ground. “School of Rock” was adapted into a hit Broadway musical, but perhaps it’s time to get the band back together on the big screen.
“I wish there’d be a ‘School of Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo,'” Black said, referencing the 1984 sequel to the dance musical “Breakin’.” The comedian added: “I’m ready.”
“You know Mike White wrote the first one and he’s a genius,” Black continued. “And we’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle, but he’s real busy right now with ‘White Lotus,’ the best show on TV.”
“School Rock” starred Black as Dewey Finn, a down-on-his-luck guitarist who puts together a makeshift band of kid musicians while substitute teaching at a prep school. Mike White, Sarah Silverman and Joan Cusack also starred in the film, while the child actors included future “iCarly” favorite Miranda Cosgrove.
White is currently in Thailand in production on the third season of his Emmy-winning HBO series “The White Lotus,” and it appears Black will only go ahead with a “School of Rock” sequel if it’s White who is putting the pen on paper.
Black toldEntertainment Tonightin April 2022 that “School of Rock” remained the high point of his career. “My best memories are just that group of kids, and how funny and great they were,” he said at the time. “It’s definitely the highlight of my career, I can say that. Honestly.” In addition to the Broadway musical, “School of Rock” also spawned a Nickelodeon series of the same name.
“School of Rock” might be the highlight of Black’s career, but it turns out it’s not the film he is most proud of.
“In a weird way, it might be ‘Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny,’ because that’s the only movie that I wrote,” Black toldPeople magazine last year. “So, that one is actually my real baby. Maybe it’s not the best, but it is my proudest.”
“School of Rock” is available to stream on Netflix.
