Hallie Jackson Takes Anchor Duties at Sunday ‘NBC Nightly News’

Hallie Jackson is taking NBC’s venerable “Nightly News” to Washington D.C. for one night each week.

The NBC News senior Washington correspondent has been named the new anchor of NBC’s Sunday evening-news broadcast, taking the reins from Kate Snow. The Sunday broadcast will originate from the nation’s capital. Jackson’s first official day at the desk will be April 7. NBC News informed staffers of the decision Wednesday.

“Hallieisan exceptional journalist and an extraordinary broadcaster, representing theverybest of NBC News. She is a natural fit to anchor our flagship newscast on Sundays,”said Janelle Rodriguez, NBC News’ executive vice president of programming, in a statement.

Jackson will continue her duties leading “Hallie Jackson Now,” a two-hour early-evening program offered via the live-streaming outlet NBC News Now. NBC News expanded that program from an hour after taking note of viewer reaction. And she will also continue to contribute to various NBC News programs as well as special political coverage.

NBC’s Sunday evening newscast has fared well in the current TV season, according to data from Nielsen. Season to date as of March 17, “Nightly News Sunday” has seen an 18% increase in viewers between the ages of 25 and 54, the demographic craved most by advertisers in news programming.

Jackson joined NBC News in 2014 as an embed covering the presidential campaign of Senator Ted Cruz. She is one of a number of young reporters once dubbed “The Road Warriors” who covered various runs for The White House. Her group also included Steve Kornacki, Kristen Welker, Kasie Hunt, Jacob Soboroff, and Katy Tur.

Her experience has broadened since that time. In February 2020, Jackson co-moderated the NBC News and MSNBC Democratic presidential debate in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was an instrumental operative for coverage of the Trump administration. And she has worked to cover issues such as mental health and issues facing mothers during the coronavirus.

Jackson would go on to anchor programs for MSNBC and become NBC News chief White House correspondent. She has filled in on the weekly “NBC Nightly News” for Lester Holt on occasion.

Prior to joining NBC News, Jackson worked for Hearst Television in Washington, D.C, providing daily coverage of political and national events for its 26 affiliates. Shegraduated from Johns Hopkins University with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
