Nzingha Stewart is attached to direct the first episode of the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series adaptation of “We Were Liars,” PvNew has learned exclusively.
The series was originally picked up at Prime Video in March 2023. It is based on the E. Lockhart YA novel of the same name. The series is described as “a tragic love story and an amnesia thriller set on a privately owned island off the coast of Massachusetts.” Mamie Gummer, Caitlin FitzGerald, and Candice King will star.
Stewart previously served as an executive producer and director on the Prime Video series “Daisy Jones and the Six” as well as on the upcoming Prime Video series “Cross,” based on the Alex Cross novels by James Patterson. Her other TV directing credits include “Little Fires Everywhere,” “From Scratch,” “Inventing Anna,” “Maid,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” In film, she directed the popular Netflix film “Tall Girl” and is attached to direct “Life in Motion” for New Line and “The Bad Ass Biker Chicks of Marrakech,” the last of which she co-wrote with Lindsay Cohen

“We Were Liars” is written and executive produced by Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie, with Plec writing the first episode and MacKenzie writing the second. Emily Cummins of Plec’s My So-Called Company also executive produces, as does Lockhart. Universal Television is the studio.
The book has sold nearly 3 million copies worldwide and spent over 40 weeks on the New York Times YA bestseller list.
