Netflix has released the trailer for the upcoming mystery series “3 Body Problem,” set to premiere on the streamer on March 21. The trailer was unveiled at CES in Las Vegas.
From creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo, the series is based on the 2008 novel “The Three-Body Problem” by Liu Cixin. The trio also serve as executive producers and writers. Benioff and Weiss previously collaborated on “Game of Thrones” together while Woo is an alum of “True Blood.”
The logline for “3 Body Problem” reads, “A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.”
The cast includes Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, Benedict Wong and Jonathan Pryce.
Netflix’s Tudum offers a character guide for the series. Woo spoke to Tudum about the process of adapting the novel: “What we are hoping to do is to convey the experience — if not necessarily the exact details — of the novel onto the screen. What stayed, we hope, is the sense of wonderment and the sense of scope, of scale, where the problems are no longer just the problems of an individual or even a nation, but of an entire species.”
Bernadette Caulfield serves as executive producer on “3 Body Problem.” Additional executive producers include Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman and Nena Rodrigue for T-Street. The late Lin Qi is an executive producer alongside Zhao Jilong, in addition to Xiaosong Gao and Lauren Ma. Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner executive produce for Pitt’s production banner Plan B Entertainment. Rosamund Pike and Robie Uniacke executive produce on behalf of Primitive Streak. Derek Tsang and Andrew Stanton serve as directors and co-executive producers. Jeremy Podeswa and Minkie Spiro also direct.
