One woman’s voice could be the light that a war-torn nation needs in the first trailer for “All the Light We Cannot See,” Netflix‘s limited series adaptation of thebestselling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelby Anthony Doerr.

Set during World War II, the story follows a blind French teenager, Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Aria Mia Loberti), who escapes from German-occupied Paris with her father, Daniel LeBlanc (Mark Ruffalo). The two have a legendary stone in their possession that they must keep from falling into the hands of Nazi looters. The pair seek shelter with Marie-Laure’s uncle, Etienne LeBlanc (Hugh Laurie) in St. Malo, France. Etienne belongs to the French Resistance and records secret radio broadcasts.

The first trailer sees Marie-Laure become a pivotal voice for her uncle’s war efforts. Her words make her the target of the Nazis.

“I know that broadcasting could get me executed, but I will not be silenced,” a firm Marie-Laure says.

Shawn Levy directs all four episodes of the limited series. Levy, Dan Levine and Steven Knight executive produce. The first two episodes premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, with Montreal native Levy also honored with the inaugural Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award at the festival.

“So many period pieces are magnificently crafted, but they feel somewhat austere or emotionally remote,” said Levy in a release accompanying the trailer. His goal with “All the Light We Cannot See” was to make a “beautiful-looking period drama” that would “allow audiences to engage with these characters and their humanity.”

The limited series will release Nov. 2 on Netflix.
