‘Fremont,’ Sundance Movie Starring First-Time Actor Anaita Wali Zada and Jeremy Allen White, Sells Widely for Memento International

Memento International has closed a raft of deals on “Fremont,” a critically acclaimed film starring Anaita Wali Zada, an Afghan refugee and first-time actor, and featuring “The Bear” actor Jeremy Allen White.

Directed by BAFTA-nominated Iranian-born director Babak Jalali, the black-and-white movie tells the story of Donya, a young woman working at a Chinese fortune cookie factory in the San Francisco bay. Formerly a translator for the U.S. military in Afghanistan, she struggles to put her life back in order. In a moment of sudden revelation, she decides to send out a special message in a cookie. Following its Sundance premiere, the film was acquired by Music Box for North America in a deal negotiated by CAA.

Memento International has just struck deals for the movie in Australia and New Zealand (Mushroom Studios), Eastern Europe (HBO), Spain (MadferFilms), Italy (Wanted), Greece (One From the Heart), Czech Republic (Aerofilms), Benelux (Vedette) and Airlines (Anuvu).

“Fremont”is produced by Marjaneh Moghimi’s Butimar Productions and Rachael Fung’s Extra A Productions in association with Oscar-nominated directorFlorian Zeller(“The Father,” “The Son”) and Federica Sainte-Roseat Blue Morning Pictures. The film is also produced by the late Moghimi, Sudnya Shroff, Rachael Fung, George Rush, Chris Martin and Laura Wagner.

Previous deals were closed for the U.K. (Modern Films), France (JHR), Germany, Austria, Switzerland (Trigon), Sweden (Draken), Indonesia (PT Falcon) and the Middle East (Front Row).

Jalali previously directed “Land,” which played at Berlin; “Radio Dreams,” winner of the best film award at Rotterdam; and “Frontier Blues,” which competed at Locarno. “Fremont” was penned by Jalali and Carolina Cavalli, whose filmmaking credits include “Amanda.”
