A remake of the ’90s classic “Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead” is coming to theaters in spring.

Nicole Richie and June Squibb will lead an ensemble including Jermaine Fowler (“Superior Donuts”), comic Ms. Pat, Olympian Gus Kenworthy, and newcomers Simone Joy Jones, Donielle Tremaine Hansley, Miles Fowler, Iantha Richardson and Tyriq Withers.

Like the 1991 film, “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” follows 17-year-old girl Tanya (Jones), who plans to vacation in Europe with her friends before heading to college in the fall. But her mom (Ms. Pat) decides to go to a wellness retreat in Thailand, so Tanya is forced to stay home with her siblings. When — as the title suggests — their elderly babysitter (Squibb) unexpectedly dies, Tayna gets a job working for an ambitious woman named Rose (Ritchie). As she juggles work, family and a complicated romance, Tanya navigates adulthood at the cost of her last summer of freedom.

Wade Allain-Marcus directed the reboot from a script by “Ted Lasso” writer Chuch Hayward. Iconic Events Releasing will debut the film exclusively in cinemas on April 12. It was produced with BET+ and will land on the streaming service at a later date.

The original film, starring Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy and Josh Carles, was directed by Stephen Herek and written by Neil Landau and Tara Ison. It wasn’t a critical or commercial smash, grossing $25 million against a $10 million budget. But it’s become a cult favorite in the following decades.

Tyra Banks serves as executive producer on the new version through her company SMiZE Productions. Producers include Juliet Berman, Oren Segal, Justin Nappi and Juliana Maio. Michael Phillips and Tova Laiter were as senior executive producers, and Ryan Huffman as executive producer with Eric Tosstorff and Kim Coleman co-producing.

The deal was brokered by Nick Royak on behalf of Iconic Events Releasing and Juliet Berman on behalf of the filmmakers.
