‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Rules U.K., Ireland Box Office

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £6.9 million ($8.7 million), according to numbers from Comscore.

Universal’s animation “Migration” dropped a spot to second place with £2.7 million in its third weekend and now has a total of £13.5 million. Sony’s “Madame Web” debuted in third position with £2.2 million.

In fourth place, in its third weekend, Universal’s “Argylle” earned £544,846 for a total of £5 million. Rounding off the top five was Warner Bros.’ “Wonka” that collected £424,825 in its 11th weekend for a total of £62.1 million.

There were no other debuts in the top 10.

The midweek release coming up is the 48th & 1/2 anniversary, as the makers style it, re-release of Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones’ cult 1975 comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” starring John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, Gilliam and Jones, from Graft Entertainment. It opens Wednesday, Feb. 21.

“All of Us Strangers” lead Andrew Scott stars in filmed theater release “Vanya – NT Live 2024” from the U.K.’s National Theatre, which opens on Thursday.

There are a plethora of releases this weekend, many of them acclaimed titles from the 2023 fall festival season. Among them are two films that bowed at Toronto – Thea Sharrock’s “Wicked Little Letters,” starring Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley from Studiocanal, and Michael Winterbottom’s Palestine-Israel story “Shoshana” from Altitude. Mubi is opening German auteur Wim Wenders’ Cannes-winning and Oscar nominated Japanese film “Perfect Days,” while Miracle/Bohemia is bowing Mexican maestro Michel Franco’s Venice winner “Memory,” starring Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard. Sovereign is releasing Hot Docs title “A Wolfpack Called Ernesto.”

Sony is releasing highly anticipated anime title “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -To The Hashira Training,” while Signature Entertainment is scaring up horror-thriller “Out Of Darkness,” which debuted at Sitges and won breakthrough performance at the British Independent Film Awards for Safia Oakley-Green. Vertigo Releasing is opening thriller “American Star.”

With a general election due in India this summer, Reliance Entertainment is bowing political drama “Political War.” Central City Media is giving a 21st anniversary re-release to Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund’s hugely acclaimed “City of God” and also Hong Kong Lunar New Year title “The Moon Thieves.”
