James Cameron revealed last month that he’s currently knee deep in the “very hectic” post-production of “Avatar 3.” Neither the director nor Disney is ready to unveil the title for “Avatar 3,” but it sounds like it won’t be “The Seed Bearer” as Cameron once considered.

The titles for Cameron’s “Avatar” sequels have become social media fodder ever since November 2018 when the BBC reported the four movies would have the following names: “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Avatar: The Seed Bearer,” “Avatar: The Tulkun Rider,” and “Avatar: The Quest for Eywa.”

Cameron told Entertainment Tonight in 2019: “I can neither confirm nor deny — alright, here’s what I’ll tell ya: Those titles are among titles that are in consideration. And no final decisions have been made yet.”

“The Way of Water” ended up being the accurate title of the second “Avatar” movie, which opened in theaters in December 2022 and generated $2.3 billion in worldwide ticket sales to become the third-highest grosser in movie history (unadjusted for inflation). Some had doubted Cameron and claimed the “Avatar” franchise was not relevant 13 years after the first movie became the box office’s top grosser with $2.9 billion. Such claims were obviously wrong.

Given that “The Way of Water” was the correct “Avatar 2” title, does that mean “The Seed Bearer” is the title for the third film? Fans have been speculating, but franchise producer Jon Landau shut down the rumors.

“I’m qualified to tell you that that is not the title for ‘Avatar 3,'” Landau recently told ComicBook while promoting the launch of the “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” video game. “That’s what my Wikipedia page says? That is getting changed tonight!”

Not much is known about “Avatar 3” outside of Cameron teasing that it will introduce a more antagonistic race of Na’vi. Landau told Empire magazine earlier this year that group is the Ash People, described by the publication as “an aggressive, volcanic race” of Na’vi whose leader is Varang, played by “Game of Thrones” alum and Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter Oona Chaplin.

“We’re into a very hectic two years of post-production right now,” Cameron said during a recentNew Zealand press conference when asked for “Avatar 3” updates. “So it will be Christmas of 2025.”

Disney announced in June that Cameron’s three upcoming “Avatar” sequels were being pushed back on the release calendar yet again, extending the franchise into 2031. The studio, which acquired the franchise after its merger with Fox, had originally planned to release Cameron’s additional “Avatar” sequels two years apart from one another, with the third movie arriving in 2024. But now “Avatar 3” is opening on Dec. 19, 2025; “Avatar 4” on Dec. 21, 2029; and “Avatar 5” on Dec. 19, 2031. based on this timeline, the final “Avatar” movie will premiere 22 years after the original 2009 blockbuster.
