Directing duo David and Nathan Zellner’s latest film “Sasquatch Sunset,” starring Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones and the Six”) and Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”), is slated for a theatrical release by film distribution company Bleecker Street in 2024.
No plot details have yet been announced. The film depicts “a year in the life of a singular family,” according to its description, and Eisenberg will be playing a hairy, big-footed Sasquatch, which he previously relayed to PvNew.
“I play a Sasquatch: full makeup, full body hair, no lines. I grunt, but no lines,” Eisenberg told PvNew about his role in the upcoming project, which is currently in post-production. “I’m so looking forward to this.”
The Zellners, collectively known as The Zellner Brothers, are known for their work on 2014’s “Kumiko: The Treasure Hunter” (both served as co-writers, with David as director) and 2018’s Western “Damsel” as co-writers and co-directors. They most recently directed three episodes of Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder’s black comedy television series, “The Curse.”
The Zellners have long been fans of the large mythical figure of Sasquatch, and in 2010 made a short surrealist film, “Sasquatch Birth Journal 2,” depicting the birth of Sasquatch. “Sasquatch Birth Journal 2” premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the Sundance Short Filmmaking Award. “Sasquatch Sunset” is the brothers’ eighth feature film production together.
In addition to the Zellners and Eisenberg as producers, “Sasquatch Sunset” is produced by Lars Knudsen, Tyler Campellone, George Rush and David Harrari. Keough, Ari Aster and Gina Gammell serve as executive producers. Production companies are Square Peg, ZBI and The Space Program.
Bleecker Street became involved the film in 2022 before it began shooting in Northern California. Kent Sanderson and Avy Echenasy negotiated the deal on behalf of Bleecker Street, with producer George Rush negotiating for the filmmakers, and Protagonist Pictures represents international sales rights.
