“Maestro” and “Saltburn” took home the main prizes at the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) awards.
The guild held its 11th annual awards ceremony Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The night kicked off with the honoree awards being presented. Oscar-nominated actor Annette Bening was honored with the Distinguished Artisan award. However, due to COVID, Diana Nyad accepted the award on her behalf.
Michael Westmore was presented with the Vanguard Award for his work on “Rocky,” “Star Trek,” “Mask” and “Raging Bull.” Kevin Haney received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Hocus Pocus 2.”
The first awards for daytime TV had a “Moonlight” “La La Land” moment when an envelope mixup resulted in the nominees for hairstyling being read out instead of makeup and the team from “The Young and the Restless” came on stage to accept the award. While the screen projected the actual winners “The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula” (Swanthula Boulet, Dracmorda Boulet). As chaos and confusion ensued, host for the night Melissa Peterman stepped out to entertain the crowd which only resulted in more confusion.
“This is so awkward,” said one makeup artist who watched wondering “Why can’t they move on to the next category?”
The show continued, but during best special effects, the presenter announced there had been a tie. Except there wasn’t one in the category, after an awkward silence, they announced there wasn’t one.
Ivana Primorac and the hairstyling team of “Barbie” won best period hair stylingand/or character hair styling.
In TV, prosthetics designer Barrie Gower took home the award for best special makeup effects for “The Last of Us.” Other winners in TV included “Dancing With the Stars,” “The Morning Show” and “Saturday Night Live.”
“Maestro,” which was nominated for three awards, and went home with two awards, remains a firm favorite to win on March 10 when the Oscars are announced. PvNew’s Artisans Award recipient Kazu Hiro transformed Bradley Cooper into legendary composer Leonard Bernstein working through five various stages of makeup application to show a gradual aging process.
Although not nominated for an Oscar, Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” proved a favorite with the guild, which recognized the film for its hairstyling and makeup in the contemporary categories.
