Larry David Attacked Elmo on Live TV and Joked ‘Someone Had to Do It,’ Then Apologized After Being Told ‘You’ve Gone Too Far This Time’

Larry David was forced to issue an apology on “Today” after he spontaneously attacked Elmo live on camera. The “Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator and the “Sesame Street” icon were separate interview guests on the NBC morning show, but they had a brief crossover moment when David crashed the set and groped Elmo’s face, much to the horror of the “Today” hosts.

“Oh my god!” shrieked Savannah Guthrie as Hoda Kotb and Craig Melvin put their hands over their mouths in shock and horror. Guthrie added, “Larry, you’ve gone too far this time!”

“Let’s get back on the couch and talk about how you’re feeling,” Elmo told David, who fired back: “Somebody had to do it!”

Later, during his sit-down interview with Guthrie and Kotb, David looked directly into the camera to issue an apology to the “Sesame Street” star.

“Elmo, I just want to apologize,” David said while trying not to laugh. “I’m really sorry.”

“Thank you, Larry,” the “Sesame Street” character responded. “Elmo accepts your apology.”

It’s been quite the week for Elmo, who unexpectedly went viral on X (formerly Twitter) after asking his followers a simple question: “How is everybody doing?” The replies came flooding in — and they were full of existential dread.

“Every morning, I cannot wait to go back to sleep. Every Monday, I cannot wait for Friday to come. Every single day and every single week for life,” one X user responded. Another follower replied: “Elmo I’m depressed and broke.”

“Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing,” the character later posted in response to the anxiety-riddled responses. “Elmo will check in again soon, friends! Elmo loves you. #EmotionalWellBeing.”

Even President Joe Biden responded to Elmo, writing on X: “I know how hard it is some days to sweep the clouds away and get to sunnier days. Our friend Elmo is right: We have to be there for each other, offer our help to a neighbor in need, and above all else, ask for help when we need it. Even though it’s hard, you’re never alone.”

David, meanwhile, is making the press rounds for the upcoming 12th and final season of his HBO comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

“It’s time,” he told PvNew on the final season’s red carpet about ending the series. “Twelve seasons – that’s a lot for a television show – over 24 years. It was time. Yeah, I said [the show was ending] before. But I wasn’t 76 when I said it.”
