Kali Uchis will kick off 2024 with the release of her fourth record, a collection of Spanish-language music dubbed “Orquídeas.” Arriving on January 12, the set will include the already released “Muñekita,” featuring Dominican dembow singer El Alfa and JT from City Girls.
The Colombian-American artist shared the concept art for the record (see below) on Wednesday morning via Instagram, and in a press release, she expanded on the meaning of its title; “The orchid is the national flower of Colombia, and we have more species of orchid than anywhere on earth,” Uchis said. “I always felt distinctly intrigued and magnetized by the flower. This album is inspired by the timeless, eerie, mystic, striking, graceful and sensual allure of the orchid.”
The Grammy award-winner additionally noted she wishes “to re-define the way we look at Latinas in music,” with the “vast scope of fresh energy” fans can expect to hear in the new record.
Uchis previously shared a short video teaser featuring her silky vocals and set in a mossy garden, where a remote navigates through languages an old TV. The screen first displays “Kali Uchis Album 4,” and then “Español” is chosen. The record title quickly flashes on the screen before revealing a glowing Uchis atop a hill with the remote in hand.
The news comes amid a busy year for Uchis who just wrapped her “Red Moon In Venus” tour in support of her R&B-leaning LP of the same title that was released earlier this year. The trek included stops at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, New York’s Radio City Music Hall, Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom and several arenas. Uchis also made an appearance at Coachella this year with surprise guests Tyler, The Creator, Omar Apollo and her boyfriend Don Toliver.
