The 8th annual Crunchyroll Anime Awards just concluded in Tokyo — with “Jujutsu Kaisen” Season 2 wining a total of 11 honors, including the top prize of anime of the year.
Crunchyroll revealed the winners during a live ceremony Saturday, March 2, featuring celebrity presenters and musical performances. (The full list of winners is below.) A replay of the 2024 Anime Awards, hosted by voice actor Sally Amaki and entertainer Jon Kabira, will be available to stream on Crunchyroll’s official YouTube and Twitch channels.
Three-time Grammy-winner Megan Thee Stallion (pictured above) presented the award for anime of the year to “Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory/Premature Death.” The series also won trophies for best director (Shota Goshozono), best action, best character design, best cinematography, best ending and opening sequences, best supporting character (Satoru Gojo) and three voice actor awards.
In addition to Megan Thee Stallion, other presenters included Japanese singer-songwriter LiSA, award-winning actress Iman Vellani (“Ms. Marvel,” “The Marvels”), Oscar-winning duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”), director Joaquim Dos Santos (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse”), NFL star DeMarcus Lawrence, former WWE World Champion Mercedes Varnado, Indian film actor Rashmika Mandanna, director Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite,” “Snowpiercer”), Grammy-nominated songwriter, producer and recording artist Labrinth, actor-entrepreneur Liza Soberano, Japanese TV personality and former Japanese Decathlon Champion So Takei, actor-singer- model Chiaki Kuriyama and Japanese night club host, entrepreneur and TV personality Roland.
The show’s musical performances included the first live performance of the official Anime Awards theme song, created and performed by composers Hiroyuki Sawano (“Attack on Titan,” “Solo Leveling”) and Kohta Yamamoto (“Attack on Titan,” “The Seven Deadly Sins”); a rendition of “Battlecry,” the opening song of “Samurai Champloo,” performed by Shing02, OMA and Spin Master A-1 in commemoration of the show’s 20th anniversary; and a performance of “Idol” by Japanese pop duo Yoasobi, who performed their Anime Award-winning song ahead of their scheduled Coachella 2024 gig. To honor fan-favorite anime series celebrating milestones, a medley of iconic songs from each series was performed by a live orchestra.
Crunchyroll is a joint venture between U.S.-based Sony Pictures Entertainment and Japan’s Aniplex, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan). In 2022, Sony folded Funimation and incorporated its content into Crunchyroll.
“Anime fans from around the world have spoken, and collectively they cast more votes than in the history of the Anime Awards to crown the 2024 winners,” said Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll. “Anime is a powerful force, driving pop culture and connecting global fans, and it is a privilege to celebrate and honor this dynamic art form.”
