Vietnam-based sales agent Skyline Media has unveiled five new titles for sales and distribution at the ACFN market that accompanies the Busan International Film Festival. They range from horror films to gay rom com series.
“The Soul Reaper” is adapted from director-producer Thao Trang’s best-selling horror novel “Lunar New Year in Hell Village” (Tet O Lang Dia Nguc), and involves the happy occasion of a wedding turn darker after the arrival of a creepy stranger. The direction probes Vietnamese folklore and ancient customs, while the picture also Hoang Ha (of “Em Va Trinh,” Vietnam’s highest grossing film in 2022), Vo Dien Gia Huy (“Goodbye Mother”) and Huynh Thanh Truc (“Vietnamese Horror Story”).
“Cursed Cinderella” is the most expensive Vietnamese horror feature film ever produced, and consists of a twisted retelling of “Tam Cam,” the Vietnamese version of “Cinderella.” The story involves the daughter of a village chief returning to life and bringing with her the ritual of blood sacrifice. As with “The Soul Reaper,” it hails from the director-producer duo Tran Huu Tan and Hoang Quan.
Two drama titles in Skyline Media’s new line-up include: the debut director and top-selling author Tung Leo’s slice-of-life drama mini-series “The Menu of Life” ( aka “Doc Suong Mu”), about a five-star chef running an after-midnight restaurant where unique and explicit, true stories of the people in Saigon unfold; and “Black Hen” (aka “Ga Ac”), dealing with the realities of women’s status in a male-dominated society and the depraved customs of the old Vietnamese society.
“On Top” (aka “Keo Tren”), the company’s LGBTQ+ rom-com involves a succession of humorous situations after two former partners are re-connected. The show has an ensemble cast of internet-famous names, including the comedy group BB&BG Entertainment, who claim nearly half a billion views on YouTube, and other stars BB Tran, Hai Trieu, and TikTok influencer Hoang Anh Panda.
Skyline is also representing sales of Vietnam’s 2024 Oscar contender “Glorious Ashes,” multi-Golden Kite Award winner “The Brilliant Darkness,” and horror hit “Muoi: The Curse Returns.” The company has represented over 100 Vietnamese titles since being established in 2014 and has diversified to encompass production, distribution and sales functions.
