Alamo Drafthouse Closes New York City Locations ‘Until Further Notice’ Due to Rain Storm, Flooding

Alamo Drafthouse is closing its New York City locations due to a rainstorm that’s left streets and subways flooded across the five boroughs.

The theater chain said its venues in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island “will be closed until further notice.” On social media, the company said, “Please everyone stay dry & stay safe, and we hope to have you back at the movies very soon.”

Rain has blanketed the tri-state region throughout much of the week, but it intensified significantly on Friday, making the city and its surrounding area difficult to navigate and bringing traffic to a standstill. As much as 1 to 2 inches of rain was falling every hour, prompting New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency and to urge people to stay off of the roads. On Instagram, X (formerly known as Twitter) and other platforms, users shared images of water-logged parts of Manhattan and the outer boroughs. It’s unclear if the intense storm will lead to the closure of Broadway shows or events related to the New York Film Festival, which kicks off with a screening of the Netflix release “May December” on Friday, as well as an opening night party. The film stars Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, though neither star is expected to attend because of the actors strike.

The rain is expected to continue during the afternoon. “This is a dangerous weather condition and it is not over,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said during a briefing on Friday.
