Directed by Guy Ritchie, “The Covenant” tells the story of John Kinley, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, a U.S. Army Master Sgt. who risks his life to save a local interpreter named Ahmed (Dar Salim). The interpreter carried Kinley to safety after both survived a brutal gun fight during the war 2018 war in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, Master Sgt. Kinley recruits private military contractor Eddie Parker, played by Antony Starr, to help him during the black ops mission. The cast also includes Alexander Ludwig, Sean Sagar, Bobby Schofield, Emily Beecham and Jonny Lee Miller.
Despite the lukewarm box office when this film upon its initial release, “The Covenant” received very positive reviews from film critics.
“As a rescue thriller, it’s tinglingly suspenseful and real,” PvNew critic Owen Gleiberman wrote in his review. “What gives the film its power is the way that its climactic final act grows out of an organic metaphor for the flawed vision of the U.S. presence in Afghanistan. We came in with the best of intentions, but got too lost in the quagmire to follow through on our promise to the Afghan people. And so we stranded them.”
