The arrival of “WandaVision” on Blu-ray has brought with it a first look at set footage from the upcoming spinoff series, “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.” The series finds Kathryn Hahn returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as disgraced witch Agatha Harkness. Not much is known about the show, which was first announced in October 2021, but the set footage shows Agatha strolling through the woods with Marvel newcomer Joe Locke (“Heartstopper”). The cast also includes Aubrey Plaza, Patti LuPone and Caulfield Ford (reprising the role of Dottie from “WandaVision”).
“I remember Kevin [Feige] saying to me, ‘We really should think about an actual Agatha show,’ and I was like, ‘Where do I sign for that job?’” the spinoff’s head writer and executive producer Jac Schaeffer says in the teaser below. Schaeffer had those same roles on “Wandavision” and also co-wrote the 2021 Marvel movie “Black Widow.”
“The character is so deep and heartfelt and dangerous,” co-executive producer Mary Livanos adds. “Continuing the story of Agatha and getting to know her more was immediately an imperative for us as creatives. There would be nothing more delicious to Agatha Harkness than to be in a spinoff.”
The “Agatha” spinoff, which completed filming before the SAG-AFTRA strike, was originally announced with the title “Agatha: House of Harkness.” The title appeared to change to “Agatha: Coven of Chaos” by July 2022, and then to “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” come September 2023. A source with knowledge of the show told PvNew these changing titles were less a sign of indecision on Marvel’s part and more a suggestion that Agatha is up to her old skulduggery.
In “WandaVision,” Hahn was first introduced as Agnes, Wanda and Vision’s nosy neighbor, before it was revealed she was in fact Agatha Harkness, a powerful witch. In the Marvel comics and the series, Agatha is shown to have survived the Salem Witch Trials and is more than a match for Wanda/Scarlet Witch. When viewers last saw her in the finale of “WandaVision,” Wanda traps Agatha in Westview by using her powers to force Agatha to revert back to her Agnes persona.
“WandaVision,” the first live-action MCU show on Disney+, racked up 23 Emmy nominations upon its debut, including one for Hahn for best supporting actress in a limited series. One of the show’s wins came in the best original music and lyrics category for the song “Agatha All Along,” which was used as part of the reveal that Hahn’s character was not who she appeared to be.
“Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” is set to premiere on Disney+ in fall 2024. Watch the first set footage in the clip below.
