‘Mary & George’ Moves From AMC to Starz With 2024 Premiere Date

Former AMC psychodrama “Mary & George” has made the transition over to Starz with a 2024 premiere date, Starz announced on Thursday.

Starring Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine, the seven-part series is inspired by the true story of Mary Villiers (Moore), who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George (Galitzine), to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England and become his all-powerful lover. “Through scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors. All this at a time when England’s place on the world stage was under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters were taking to the streets to denounce the King,” reads the official description.

“‘Mary & George’ is the perfect complement to Starz’s provocative slate and we’re thrilled to partner with Sky Studios to bring this extraordinary series to U.S. audiences,” said Alison Hoffman, President of Domestic Networks for STARZ. “We can’t wait for the world to discover the untold story of Mary Villiers, who mastered the art of sexual and political conquests in a male-dominated society. And to have Julianne leading this remarkable cast is a dream.”

The ensemble cast includes Nicola Walker, Niamh Algar, Trine Dyrholm, Sean Gilder, Adrian Rawlins, Mark O’Halloran, Laurie Davidson, Samuel Blenkin, Jacob McCarthy, Tom Victor, Alice Grant, Amelia Gething, Mirren Mack, Rina Mahoney and Simon Russell Beale.

As PvNew previously reported, AMC Networks held the exclusive distribution rights in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India. Now scheduled to debut in 2024 as a Starz original in the U.S. and Canada, the deal to buy the distribution rights was brokered by Sky Studios, who produces the series in association with Hera Pictures. NBCUniversal Global Distribution handles international sales on behalf of Sky Studios.

Written by D.C. Moore (“Killing Eve,” “Temple”), the script is inspired by Benjamin Woolley’s nonfiction book “The King’s Assassin.” Liza Marshall is executive producer for Hera Pictures alongside D.C. Moore, Oliver Hermanus and Julianne Moore. Hermanus (“Living,” “Moffie”) also helms the series as lead director. Sam Hoyle serves as executive producer for Sky Studios.
