2023 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Television Movie

Emmys: TV Movie – Sci-Fi Prequel ‘Prey’ Brings Jhane Myers, First Indigenous Woman Nominated for Producing, and She Could Win
NBC

Weekly Commentary (Updated Aug. 17, 2023): It’s a “weird” season, but there have been pleasant surprises.

“Prey,” the Predator prequel, which was filmed in the Stoney Nakoda First Nation west of Calgary nabbed six inspired nominations including outstanding television movie, directing and writing. And while Indigenous Peoples are still underrepresented in awards ceremonies (only one acting nominee ever with August Schellenberg for “Bury My Heart at Wounded” in 2007), we have a historic with Jhane Myers, who is the first Indigenous woman nominated for producing.

Al Yankovic is a double nominee now for producing his self-parody biopic, “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” for The Roku Channel, in addition to his nod for original song for the track “Now You Know.” The film also brought an interesting nominee with producer Henry R. Muñoz III, who in addition to owning the comedy studio Funny or Die, is also the former finance chair of the Democratic National Committee (2013-2019).

“Fire Island” producer Tony Hernandez is a double nominee alongside his scripted variety series “A Black Lady Sketch Show” alongside his Jax Media partner Brooke Posch.

And so it’s on the record — we all know we should never discount Dolly Parton.

The rankings for the category are below.

The final Emmy voting rounds open on Aug. 17 at 9 a.m. PT and close on Aug. 28 at 10 p.m. PST. The 75th Emmy Awards are scheduled to air on Monday, January 15, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT. The Creative Arts ceremony will occur on Saturday, January 6, and Sunday, January 7. An edited version will air on FXX on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET. All events will take place at the Peacock Theater at LA Live.
