SPOILER alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 10, Episode 6 of “The Masked Singer,” “Harry Potter Night,” which aired Oct. 25 on Fox.
The timing couldn’t have been better: With Halloween approaching, it was a spooky “Harry Potter”-themed episode of “The Masked Singer” this week, so it was only appropriate that “Teen Wolf” star Tyler Posey would be the next celebrity to be unmasked in Season 10.
Posey was revealed to be Hawk, after this week performing “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” by The Police. “I have this checklist of random weird things that you only get to experience once in a lifetime,” Posey told PvNew. “And this fit right in with that. This is just a fun, interesting, random, bizarre experience that I was just completely down to do. It’s also challenging. I’ve always been sort of awkward when it comes to choreographed dancing. And claustrophobia is a little weird for me. The whole experience was something that I really wanted to kind of push myself through, and give it my all.”
This time out, no one got it right, although they were mostly in the ballpark. Ken Jeong picked Cole Sprouse. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg guessed Chad Michael Murray. Robin Thicke named Ryan Phillippe. Nicole Scherzinger went with Billie Joe Armstrong.
“I thought the producers did a pretty good job at keeping me sort of vague with the hint,” he said. “I was flattered with who they guessed. There were a lot of idols of mine in those guesses like Billie Joe Armstrong and Pete Wentz. I thought that was really sweet that they thought that I could have been one of them.”
The two singers with the least number of votes, facing off in a smackdown to determine who would be unmasked, were Tiki and Hawk. The two contestants sang their own spin on “Monster,” by Lady Gaga. Tiki moved on to next week, while Hawk was unmasked.
Had he continued on, Posey said he was looking at a Backstreet Boys song as potentially his next performance.
“I was really excited to have myself be exposed finally so I can spill the beans with all my friends and be like, ‘guess what I’ve been doing the past few months.’ Even though I wish that I went further, I’m ready to tell everybody,” Posey added.
Tyler Posey as Hawk joins Billie Jean King as Royal Hen, Michael Rapaport as Pickle, Tom Sandoval as Diver, Anthony Anderson as Rubber Ducky and one-time special guest Demi Lovato as Anonymouse as the Season 10 unmasked celebrities so far.
This week’s “Harry Potter Night” theme followed each contestant — Sea Queen, Hawk, Husky and Tiki — as they were assigned a Hogwarts house from the Sorting Hat (Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Slytherin). Each contestant then performed a song in theme with the week’s episode, like “Love Potion No. 9” and “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.” Also guest starring on the episode: Adrienne Bailon-Houghton (Flamingo from Season 2), who opened the show with a performance of “I Put a Spell On You.”
This was week two of Group B, which featured a new Wildcard contestant: Sea Queen. (The Group A Finals will include S’more, Cow and Gazelle.)
“The Masked Singer” features a new format this season, with three groups followed by Battle Royale semi-final episodes. The season also includes the return of Wild Card contestants, with one Wild Card introduced to each group, and the “Ding Dong Keep It On Bell” is back in the Battle Royale semi-final episodes, where the judges can choose to save one contestant from elimination and move them directly to the finale.
With sixteen total celebrity singers, Season 10 features new costumes including “Donut,” “Anteater,” “Hawk,” “Hibiscus,” “Diver,” “Gazelle,” “Royal Hen,” “Husky,” “Tiki,” “Pickle,” “Rubber Ducky,” “Candelabra,” “Cow,” “Sea Queen,” “Anonymouse” and a life-size “S’More.” Also returning to mark the show’s 10th are celebrities who have been previously unmasked since the show began. According to the show, Season 10 contestants “boast a combined 40 medals, 33 Grammy nominations, seven hall of fame awards, three lifetime achievement awards and over 50 tattoos.”
The season’s themed episodes will include a tribute to Elton John; a “Trolls Night” tied to the November release of DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls Band Together”; a “Harry Potter Night” airing the week of Halloween; “NFL Night”; “One Hit Wonders”; “Disco”; “2000s Night”; “I Wanna Rock”; and “Soundtrack of My Life.” Back for Season 10 are host Nick Cannon, alongside panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke.
Here were the other performances on this week’s episode:
Tiki
Song: “Magic,” by Pilot
Panel guesses: Dave Grohl, Jon Bon Jovi, Roger Daltry, Robert Plant
Harry Potter house clue: Gryffindor. “You gotta be brave to be front and center on the types of stages that I command.”
Package voiceover: “Making my debut last week was just beachy. And now, getting to perform again on Harry Potter night feels pretty fitting, because I’ve really found the magic in my life these days. There comes a time in every rockin’ tropical cocktail’s life where they need to decide what comes next. Do you let yourself get watered down, or do you change with the tides? I decided to put the hard partying lifestyle on the back burner and my family on tap. I used to be up every night partying until 6 a.m. Now that’s what time my alarm goes off to take my kid to school. It makes me emotional, just thinking about it. I definitely don’t want tonight to be my last call. So when I get out there on stage, you’re going to see that this Tiki is still on the rocks!”
Previous song: “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” by Elton John
Previous panel guesses: John Stamos, David Lee Roth, Robert Plant
Husky
Song: “Superfreak,” by Rick James
Panel guesses: Tank, Ginuwine, Brian McKnight
Harry Potter house clue: Hufflepuff. “I actually had a feeling I’d be the Hufflepuff. Because of my connection to Mr. Puff himself, P Diddy.”
Package voiceover: “I showed everyone last week, this dog can still hunt. But just like Harry Potter growing up, I was also an underestimated wizard. As a young pup, I was picked on a lot. Other kids always giving me a hard time and calling me skinny. So I retreated. Started working out on my magical arts and evolved from a skinny boy to a husky man. Soon, all those old naysayers saw my rise to the top dog. But, confession. Despite all the love, and inspiring some lovemaking, to this day I still don’t feel like I’ve made it. In my head, I’m just that little puppy with a dream trying to make something out of himself. And now I’m here, to prove that I believe in me enough to do anything, like winning ‘The Masked Singer.’”
Previous song: “Benny and the Jets,” by Elton John
Previous panel guesses: Babyface, Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut
Hawk
Song: “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” by The Police
Panel guesses: Ryan Phillippe, Andrew Garfield, Billie Joe Armstrong
Harry Potter house clue: Ravenclaw: “It makes a lot of sense that I am Ravenclaw. Because I was a good student. Or at least you saw me on TV pretending to be.”
Package voiceover: “I can’t believe I came out on top in that epic battle of the birds. Getting to let loose felt really magical. And these days, I try to find the magic wherever I can. Not too long ago, someone close to me lost their battle with cancer. She was my support system and my best friend. After she passed, nothing seemed to matter. I sunk into a deep well of loneliness and depression. I realized she wouldn’t want me to live my life this way. So I finally opened up about my feelings and got help. I’ve learned that while the pain will never go away, it lessens. And now I hope to inspire others that no matter how dark things may get, there’s always a way to find some light again.”
Previous song: “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting),” by Elton John
Previous panel guesses: Cole Sprouse, Pete Wentz, Corey Feldman, Austin Butler
Sea Queen (Wildcard)
Song: “Love Potion No. 9,” by The Searchers
Panel guesses: Erykah Badu, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Lewis
Harry Potter house clue: Slytherin. “Slytherin makes sense for me. I’ve always been clever in my career. You’ll never know what genre I’m in next.”
Package voiceover: “When I got asked to appear as Sea Queen on Harry Potter night as a wildcard, I said great. Sign me up. Because I’ve always been a bit of a wild card in life. I got my first job giving museum tours at 14. But, I got fired. And then, because I was a smart cookie, my mom got me into boarding school. But I got kicked out. All the wild twists and turns made me the triple threat that I am today. Comedy, writing, singing, I’ve done it all. And these days, I’m preparing for a new tour! Oh, and dressing up in a giant costume, getting ready to put you all under my spell. Should we do this thing?”
“The Masked Singer” is produced by Fox Alternative Entertainment, with James Breen (who is also showrunner), Craig Plestis and Cannon as executive producers.
