On June 23, Britney Spears broke her silence. The pop star publicly spoke out against her conservatorship, addressing the court for the first time in 13 years. She told a judge: “I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m OK and I’m happy. It’s a lie. I’ve been in denial.”

Spears firmly stated why her conservatorship needs to end, calling it “abusive,” and stating that her conservators should be in jail. Her father, Jamie Spears, has been the sole conservator of her estate since 2008 when she was initially placed under legal guardianship.

“I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized,” Spears told Judge Brenda Penny during the hearing. “Fake it ’til you make it, but now I’m telling you the truth, OK? I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m depressed. I cry every day.”

Spears also talked about wanting to have another child, which she said she has been unable to do. She said, “I’m not able to get married or have a baby, I have a IUD inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children any more children.”

In light of the pop star’s blistering testimony, celebrities have rallied around her to support the #FreeBritney hashtag.

Madonna — who infamously kissed Spears onstage during their iconic 2003 performance at the VMAs, and collaborated on the song “Me Against the Music” on Spears’ fourth studio album, In the Zone — took to her Instagram to support the Princess of Pop on July 9, comparing her conservatorship to slavery.

“Give this woman her life back,” Madonna demanded. “Slavery was abolished so long ago!”

The statement was posted on Madonna’s Instagram Stories on July 9 along with a photo of herself wearing a shirt that says “Britney Spears.”

Madonna’s caption continued:“Death to the greedy patriarchy that has been doing this to women for centuries. This is a violation of human rights! Britney we coming to get you out of jail!”

Another musical icon, Cher, has also weighed in on Spears’ situation, stating that “everyone” in town knew about Spears’ father. She continues on stating that she’s aware how much work goes into a Vegas residence and states that it must have been a “living hell” for Spears.
