Black Music Action Coalition to Present Its ‘Industry Report Card’ on Friday

The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) will present an overview of its inaugural Industry Action Report Card on Friday morning June 18th as part of the National Museum of African American Music’s State of Black Music Summit.

With journalist and industry exec Naima Cochrane, BMAC drafted its first-of-its-kind report to “track and measure how individual companies in the music industry delivered on their pledges to work toward justice, equality and change in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and #TheShowMustBePaused last June,” according to the announcement. They examined the actions and work of major labels, publishers, DSP’s and other companies in the music industry that publicly committed to making monetary contributions and internal work to address and repair systemic bias, from June 2020 to June 2021.

BMAC will release the report in full on Friday afternoon June 18th, immediately following its presentation at the National Museum of African American Music’s State of Black Music Summit.

Considering the largely negative conclusions reached by the USC-Annenberg report on diversity in the music industry released Tuesday — which found major music companies woefully lagging in their stated efforts toward greater racial and gender parity in their ranks — it seems likely that BMAC’s report will be unfavorable toward the industry as well.

BMAC is a group of 200-plus artist managers, attorneys, business managers, agents and other industry executives who formed the organization shortly after Juneteenth last year.

“This advocacy organization endeavors to uphold and actualize the mission ofBlack Lives Matterin the music industry and reach racial justice not just across labels, publishers, agencies, distributors, and DSP’s but throughout society at large,” its announcement read.
