‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 2 Moves to Netflix After Paramount+ Cancellation

“Star Trek: Prodigy” Season 2 is warping its way to Netflix.

The animated kids’ series set in the “Star Trek” universe originally aired on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon beginning in 2021. It was renewed for a second season, but Paramount announced they were scrapping the second season and removing the first season from Paramount+ in June 2023.

The first season of “Prodigy” will debut on Netflix later this year, with the second season slated to premiere on the streaming giant in 2024.

With this move, “Prodigy” will be the first new “Star Trek” series to air domestically outside of the Paramount ecosystem since the revamped “Star Trek” TV universe launched with “Star Trek: Discovery” in 2017.

Per the official description of “Prodigy,” the show follows “a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.”

The voice cast includes: Kate Mulgrew as Hologram Kathryn Janeway, Brett Gray as Dal, Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, Angus Imrie as Zero, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Dee Bradley Baker as Murf, John Noble as The Diviner, and Jimmi Simpson as Drednok. Also featured in the series are recurring voice cast members Daveed Diggs as Commander Tysess, Jameela Jamil as Ensign Asencia, Jason Alexander as Doctor Noum, Robert Beltran as Captain Chakotay, and Billy Campbell as Thadiun Okona.

Kevin and Dan Hageman developed the series along with Alex Kurtzman and his team at Secret Hideout. The Hagemans also serve as showrunners and executive producers. Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth also executive produce. Ben Hibon directs, executive produces, and serves as the creative lead of the series. Aaron Waltke and Patrick Krebs also serve as co-executive producers. The series is produced by CBS Studios’ Eye Animation Productions, Nickelodeon Animation, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment.

“Thank you to our incredible ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ fans, who championed not just a show but a community that’s always been connected by the belief that we build a better future together,” Kurtzman and the Hagemans said in a joint statement. “We set out to inspire you but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on the second season, and we can’t wait to share it with the amazing fans around the world.”

Paramount has a number of “Star Trek” shows in various states of production. It was previously announced that “Discovery” would be ending with its upcoming fifth season, while both “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” and “Star Trek: Lower Decks” had been renewed ahead of their new season premieres. “Star Trek: Picard” recently ended with its third season, while a “Section 31” streaming movie event starring Michelle Yeoh and a “Starfleet Academy” series are currently in the works.
