Sharon Stone Says Fame After ‘Basic Instinct’ Got So Crazy That L.A. Police Put Her in Lockdown During O.J. Simpson Car Chase: ‘We Don’t Know How Dangerous’ He Is

Sharon Stone says the fame that surrounded her in the mid-1990s after “Basic Instinct” exploded her career was so wild that she was forced into hiding by the police during the infamous 1994 O.J. Simpson car chase.

A new InStyle interview with the Oscar-nominated actor begins with the startling revelation that the Los Angeles Police Department “dispatched a squad to find Stone at home and tell her she had 10 minutes to pack a suitcase” amid the car chase because “she was being moved to a hotel for her own protection.”

“He’s dangerous,” Stone remembered an LAPD officer telling her at the time. “And we don’t know how dangerous, and we don’t know what this is.”

“While O.J. was driving up and down the fucking freeway,” Stone said she was moved into a hotel where one officer stood near reception and another kept watch at her door to make sure Simpson would not target her. Stone had no connection to Simpson, but her life had become so chaotic amid “Basic Instinct” fame that she never once questioned why police wanted her to go into hiding.

“[The police] were like, ‘Find a secure house behind a gate,’” Stone remembered about having to beef up her security team amid the fame. “It’s very expensive to be famous. You go out to dinner, and there’s 15 people at the table, and who gets the check? You get the $3,000 dinner check every single time.”

“At least now [people] understand that Jennifer Lawrence can’t just skip onto an airplane,” Stone said later in the interview about how the expectations of fame are now more understandable. “Nicole Kidman can’t jump onto Delta. Sharon Stone can’t do it either, whether or not she’s doing a lot of movies. [People] think, ‘What have you been in?’ And it’s like, dude, they know me in the Amazon rainforest. It’s tampons, Q-tips and Sharon Stone.”

Elsewhere in the InStyle interview, Stone revealed she keeps a private list of the men who have wronged her in Hollywood. She revealed last year that a former head of Sony Pictures once sexually harassed her in his office during the 1980s.

“One of the people [on the list] came and sat down next to me and said, ‘IfI’ve done something, please let me know,’” Stone said. “I said, ‘It’s time for you to stand up or I’m going to start explaining out loud to everybody here what it is that you did. Those are your two choices.”

Another man who wronged her once came in late to a screening “and the only seat left in the theater was next to me. He sat on the stairs at the end of the row.. If you can’t control yourself enough to sit next to me and say, ‘I’m not going to behave the way I did before, and I apologize,’ then don’t fucking sit next to me.”
