U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 and NBCUniversal streamer Peacock’s riotous new comedy “We Are Lady Parts” is releasing an official soundtrack, PvNew can reveal.
The stereotype-busting, Working Title-produced series about a fictional Muslim female punk band premiered on Channel 4 on Thursday to effusive praise from the U.K. press, which has widely noted that the show’s subject matter is effectively unprecedented on British television, where harmful misconceptions about the Muslim community are still rife in programming.
One look at the “We Are Lady Parts” track listing, which includes tongue-in-cheek songs such as “Ain’t No One Gonna Honour Kill My Sister But Me” and “Voldemort Under My Headscarf,” speaks volumes about the show, which boldly presents a group of female characters rarely seen on British and American lineups.
“We Are Lady Parts” is centered on Amina Hussain, a nerdy microbiology PhD student and guitar virtuoso who is on the hunt for a husband when she’s reluctantly recruited into Lady Parts as their lead guitarist. Despite herself, Amina is soon swept up in the band’s joyful, anarchic energy and punk spirit, and must eventually choose between two different worlds.
The series originated in 2018 as part of Channel 4’s Comedy Blaps program — a “comedy sandpit” that produces pilots that, if successful, get developed into longer series.
The show’s soundtrack, fromNBCUniversal International Studios and Back Lot Music, dropped on Friday, and features original songs and innovative cover tracks, written and adapted by series writer, creator and director Nida Manzoor and her siblings Shez Manzoor, who also scored the show, Sanya Manzoor and Benjamin Fregin.
“I feel so excited to get to share the ‘We Are Lady Parts’ soundtrack!” said Nida Manzoor, who has drawn on her own experiences and taken inspiration from London communities.
“The band’s music is such an intrinsic part of the show. Through the music, we see the characters in their element and singing their truth, capturing them in all their joy and silliness. This soundtrack is best enjoyed turned up to eleven, headbanging alone in one’s bedroom,” added Manzoor.
All music on the soundtrack is performed by the series’ fictional punk band Lady Parts, comprising Anjana Vasan (“Amina Hussain”), Sarah Kameela Impey (“Saira”), Juliette Motamed (“Ayesha”) and Faith Omole (“Bisma”). Other tracks include “Bashir With the Good Beard,” “Fish and Chips” as well as covers of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” and Queen’s “We Are the Champions.”
The album is now available on digital streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Deezer.
The show is available as a box set on Channel 4’s VOD service All 4. It will launch on NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock on June 3 and Showcase in Canada on June 9. The show debuts Friday on Stan in Australia and Sky New Zealand.
“We Are Lady Parts”is produced by Working Title Television, which is part of NBCUniversal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group. The series is distributed internationally by NBCUniversal Global Distribution.
