The Playmaker Boards Dark Thriller ‘The G’ Starring Dale Dickey, Trailer Debuts

The Playmaker has signed with 3Buck Productions to handle international sales for “The G,” written and directed by Karl R. Hearne. “The G” is a dark thriller about a mysterious older woman hellbent to get revenge on the corrupt legal guardian who destroyed her life. PvNew debuts the trailer below.

“The G” had its world premiere at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival last year and will have its U.K. premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival later this month. The Playmaker will present “The G” at the European Film Market in Berlin (Feb. 15 – 21), and hold a screening for attending international buyers.

The film mixes dark humor, implicit social commentary and intense genre elements to powerful effect. John Bleasdale of PvNew called the film “a gender flipping tale of violent revenge,” and added that it was “an original and entertaining thriller.”

“We are very excited to present ‘The G’ to our international distributors at the upcoming EFM. A dark thriller with the most ruthless grandma character you can imagine, who at the same time captures your heart and makes you root for her in this captivating revenge story,” Moritz Hemminger, head of sales and acquisitions at The Playmaker, said.

“We’re delighted to have The Playmaker taking over international sales of ‘The G,’” commented director/producer Karl R. Hearne. “This film is a ‘winter noir,’ based on real-world elder scams, and inspired by my own grandmother’s story and character. It’s about a woman who – regardless of her age or situation – refuses to accept that her life is over. I think of it as a revenge story against old age itself.”

Levelfilm is handling distribution in Canada, Lightbulb Film Distribution in the U.K./Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, with The Playmaker handling sales for the rest of the world.

Hearne’s arthouse ghost story “Touched” was nominated for best first feature at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards. “The G” is his second feature.
