Quotes: The cathedral is the most amazing thing. When you're feeling a bit above yourself and a bit pompous and a bit big-headed, you look up at the cathedral and it'll put you right back into place. But when you're feeling insecure and vulnerable and needing some support, you can look up to the cathedral and it will pull you up to its level. You'll get all the support you'll need.

This notion of faith, David says, served him well during filming. "That kind of speaks to mind going into Pillars of the Earth," he says. "The message sort of runs through."

One wonderful person told me that I always want what I don't have; maybe she's correct in part, but I think that is one way to look at ambition. I think it's hard for actors, humans, to do the same thing every day and to maintain the same enthusiasm one had for it as they had towards the beginning - unless it grows.

We who have lived already owe those that have yet to live the opportunity to live well.

I love it [a career as an actor] to bits, but it's highly bizarre, especially when you're playing a psychopathic rapist with various diseases.

You work [as an actor] for a bit, and then the job ends 'cause you get thrown off a bridge. And then, you suddenly don't have a career and you have to wait for the next bit to come along. It's the most strange profession in the world.
