Tivia: The group was close friends with Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Voytek Frykowski and Abigail Folger, all victims murdered by the "Manson Family", led by Charles Manson. Denny Doherty once revealed that he and John were invited over to Cielo Drive on the night of the murders but declined the invitation. The sheet music to the John Phillips-penned "Straight Shooter" was actually found open at the piano in the house at Cielo Drive when the bodies of the victims were found.John Phillips penned "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)," a hit for Scott McKenzie, and also co-wrote The Beach Boys' "Kokomo".Have sold over 40 million records worldwide. The track "Pearl" was written as a tribute to Janis Joplin. With the death of Denny Doherty on January 19, 2007, Michelle Phillips is the last surviving original member of the group.Along with Lou Adler, John Phillips and Michelle Phillips organized the legendary Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967; the group also closed the festival.Members have included John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot, Jill Gibson (temporarily replaced Michelle Phillips)."California Dreamin'" was ranked #89 in Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The group was part of what was deemed "The In Crowd" or "The Beautiful People of L.A." back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their circle of friends included Jane Fonda, Jack Nicholson, Joni Mitchell, Warren Beatty, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Dennis Hopper, Cher and Mick Jagger.Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000.Originally called The Inner Circle, they changed their name to The Mamas and the Papas (a slang term used in biker culture for bikers and their wives or girlfriends) shortly before recording their first album. The 1971 album "People Like Us" only came to be because the group was still under contract to Dunhill Records. They had originally been signed to the label when it was run by their original producer Lou Adler, but by 1971 Dunhill's distributor, ABC Records, had purchased the label and discovered the clause in the group's original contract. According to their contract, the group had to produce one more album, or else be in breach of contract and subject to possible fines.Legend has it that Cass Elliot developed her higher vocal range after being hit on the head by a pipe.During recording of "I Saw Her Again", lead singer Denny Doherty came in too early with the first line of the third chorus, a mistake that was intentionally left in by producer Lou Adler during mixing. As well as a selection of Cass Elliot's solo material, some of the band's best known hits were featured in the film Beautiful Thing (1996).They named The Beatles as influences on their own music. The two bands would become friends after meeting for the first time in 1966 during a promotional trip that the Mamas and the Papas undertook in England in 1966.Their debut album, "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears", was ranked #127 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.According to John Phillips and Michelle Phillips, "California Dreamin'" was written in 1963 while they were living in New York. John dreamed about the song and woke Michelle up to help him write it.
