Born in Liverpool, one of eight children. David's father was a Chinese seaman from the Canton area of southern China, and his mother was from Liverpool. He trained at E15 Acting School, London in 1973 and since then worked in Film, Television, Theatre, Radio and other voice work both in the UK and internationally. David still visits and works there regularly, but lives with his wife in North Oxfordshire, UK.
