Kay had a premonition the night of the 1994 Northridge 6.8-magnitude earthquake and, thinking it would be safer, decided to sleep downstairs in her home located in the nearby community of Toluca Lake. She found herself buried in reading material as the bookshelf next to the couch on which she was sleeping fell and emptied itself on top of her, leaving her temporarily stranded, until subsequently rescued by a neighbor who, hearing her muffled moans, broke into the house.Kay, who was born in Portland, OR, became friends with the famous cartoon voice artist Mel Blanc who was also raised in Portland.For many years, Kay was the radio voice of Elsie the Cow.Performed the role of Mrs. Hannigan in "Annie" during the summer of 1982 (at age 67), including choreography that included high kicks.Was a big-band singer.
