After his parents, Jack and Sadie, separated when he was 14, he lived with his father, a prosperous accountant, but it was his mother who had the greatest impact on him. At 19, he married Pam soon after leaving Sunderland, but in 1977, she was replaced by Annie Lennox, whom he met in 1977 after she had dropped out of the Royal College of Music.
