In spite of the fact, that he only had been on a conservatory for only short time, he was a very successful popular composer, who wrote with lyricist and later producer Arthur Freed not only the songs for MGM musical and non-musical films, e.g. "Broadway Melody" for the movie "The Broadway Melody", "You Are My Lucky Star" and "Broadway Rhythm" for "Broadway Melody of 1936", "Temptation" for "Going Hollywood" and - best remembered - "Singin' in the Rain" from "The Hollywood Revue of 1929", which became a classic in the movie "Singin' in the Rain" in the version of Gene Kelly. He also worked with Richard A. Whiting and Buddy G. DeSylva on the Broadway Musical "Take a Chance."Songwriter ("Singin' in the Rain", "Temptation", "You Are My Lucky Star"), composer and publisher, educated at Musical Arts High School in Los Angeles, California. He operated a tailoring business, then became a realtor before becoming a composer. He joined ASCAP in 1927 and collaborated musically with Arthur Freed, plus B. G. "Buddy" DeSylva, Gus Kahn, Leo Robin and Gordon Clifford. He wrote the stage scores for the Los Angeles "Hollywood Music Box Revue" and the Broadway "Take a Chance". He came to Hollywood in 1928 under contract to MGM. His song compositions include "When Buddha Smiles", "Coral Sea", "The Wedding of the Painted Doll", "Broadway Melody", "You Were Meant for Me", "Chant of the Jungle", "Pagan Love Song", "Should I?", "The Moon is Low", "Paradise", "You're an Old Smoothie", "Eadie Was a Lady", "We'll Make Hay While the Sun Shines", "Our Big Love Scene", After Sundown", "Beautiful Girl", "All I Do is Dream of You", "A New Moon is Over My Shoulder", "Sing Before Breakfast", "I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin'", "Alone", "Would You?", "Smoke Dreams", "I'm Feelin' Like a Million", "Your Broadway and My Broadway", "Yours and Mine", "Good Morning", "You Stepped Out of a Dream", "If I Steal a Kiss", "Love Is Where You Find It", and "Make 'Em Laugh".
