PGA Awards Nominations: ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ and ‘Zone of Interest’ Make History and Join ‘Barbie,’ ‘Oppenheimer’ and More

Nominations for the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards have been announced with the surprise of two international titles — Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” — the first time two international titles have been nominated by the guild.

The lineup includes many of the Oscars‘ usual suspects as voting for nominations is underway. Rounding out the noms are “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Past Lives” and “Poor Things.”

After being shut out of the SAG nominations, indie distributor A24 is the only studio to land two films in the top category with “Past Lives” and “The Zone of Interest.”

When the Academy expanded its best picture lineup from five to 10 nominees in 2009, the PGA duplicated the move. Since then, the guild has averaged eight of its 10 nominees translating to an Oscar Best Picture nod. However, last year saw only seven, with “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story,” and “The Whale” failing to translate in favor of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Triangle of Sadness” and “Women Talking.”

This is a tad worrisome as the 10 films recognized are heavily predicted by pundits to be the eventual best picture lineup, meaning one or two could be vulnerable. The only times the PGA and the Oscars have matched were three times during the sliding scale years when they recognized eight or nine movies: 2016, 2018, and 2019. In the years of a guaranteed 10, they missed two or more.

Some of the notable omissions include the absence of the musical adaptation of “The Color Purple,” the black-comedy “May December” and the sports dramedy “Air.”

Animated feature recognized big budget blockbusters which include “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “The Boy and the Heron,” “Elemental,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” Netflix was shut out of the category with its two contenders “Nimona” and “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” being snubbed.

On the TV side, Netflix managed to lead with hit series such as “All the Light We Cannot See,” “The Crown” and “Beef,” garnering recognition while Max had a strong showing with “The Last of Us,” “Succession” and the television movie, “Reality.”

The documentary feature nominees were previously announced, which include films from the Oscars shortlist, including “American Symphony” and “Beyond Utopia,” in addition to “The Mother of All Lies,” which is part of the international feature 15 finalists, along with “20 Days in Mariupol” that is on both lists. The other nominees are “The Disappearance of Shere Hite,” “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” and “Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis).”

All winners will be recognized at the 35th Annual Producers Guild Awards on Feb. 25 in a ceremony produced by Anchor Street Collective and executive-produced by Branden Chapman and Carleen Cappelletti.
