Barack Obama knows a good tan suit when he sees it.
And exactly one decade after his own beige workwear sparked online controversy, the former president reacted to Vice President Kamala Harris selecting a similar style for last week’s Democratic National Convention.
“How it started. How it’s going,” Obama wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, sharing side-by-side photo of the two politicians in their tan suits.

“Ten years later, and it’s still a good look!”
In 2014, the “Promised Land” author wore his infamous light brown suit during a live White House press briefing regarding the ISIS situation in Syria.
At the time, Obama’s critics argued his outfit choice lacked “seriousness.”
And in what some might argue was a bold move for Harris, the 59-year-old strayed away from traditional black and navy suiting during her appearance at the DNC on Aug. 19.
Ahead of accepting the presidential nomination for the Democratic party, Harris wore a tan Chloé blazer and matching trousers.
After Obama gave the look his stamp of approval, his followers chimed in to share their thoughts.
“You both look fresh with classy swag and confidence,” one wrote on Instagram, where Obama shared the same message and photos of the two looks. “This side by side must go into the history books.”
“We love to see it,” another added of the “iconic” reference.
Along with nodding to Obama’s viral suit — intentionally or otherwise — Harris’ look also referenced her viral “coconut tree” speech, which recently became a popular meme.
On the official Chloé website, a similar jacket in “coconut brown” is listed for $3,390.
Harris referenced the fruit in a May 2023 speech, which recently resurfaced and went viral online.
“My mother used to — she would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?'” Harris said at the time.
Many celebrities were spotted at the DNC last week — including Oprah Winfrey, who also opted for a pop of color with her purple Christian Siriano suit on Aug. 21.
